PROPERTIES
Facilitates digestion and absorption of nutrients from food
It facilitates the fragmentation or hydrolyzation of food components into simple molecules, favoring their absorption through the intestinal mucosa.
Promotes and balances the health of the intestinal flora due to its content in coated Enterococcus faecium, preventing bacterial overgrowth.
Incorporates specific enzyme catalysts
Lactase and protease: proteins
Lipase: fats
Alpha amylase and cellulase: sugars and cellulose
It provides omega 3 fatty acids (DHA) and (EPA) that are found at low levels in animals with EPI.
Oral supplementation of these omega-3 fatty acids in the diet has been shown to modify their profile in plasma and cell membranes, with improvements in nutritional, anthropometric, biochemical, and inflammatory parameters.
Inhibition of oxidation and inflammation reactions due to its content in astaxanthin and vitamin E.
Thanks to its bioactivity, astaxanthin plays an important role in the prevention and control of chronic inflammatory diseases, metabolic syndromes and gastrointestinal diseases. It inhibits the production of nitric oxide and decreases the oxidative stress caused by hypoglycemia in the beta cells of the pancreas.
It provides highly digestible nutrients with a high content of essential amino acids, lysine and threonine, and B vitamins, mainly biotin and folic acid.
Brewer's yeast has a potential prebiotic effect due to the presence of 5% mannan oligosaccharides (MOS), located in the yeast cell wall.
EXOCRINE PANCREATIC INSUFFICIENCY (EPI)
It consists of the inability of the pancreas to synthesize the amount of enzymes (protein complexes) necessary for the proper digestion of food.
There are other circumstances in which the EPI is conditioned by the inefficiency of these enzymes, as the normal intestinal antomy is altered, and it does not mix properly with food.
The exocrine function of the pancreas is essential for life, since it is made up of digestive enzymes, substances in charge of fragmenting or hydrolyzing the components of the diet.
Pancreatic enzymes are divided into 4 groups:
- Proteolytic: break down proteins
- Lipolytic: break down fats
- Glycolytic: break down sugars
- Nucleolytic: break the DNA and RNA chains.
Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency can be:
- Transient and reversible as can occur during acute pancreatitis, in which the production function is compromised by inflammatory and/or necrotic phenomena. Pancreatic function can be recovered depending on the degree of destruction of the gland.
- Chronic or irreversible causing destruction of functional tissue replaced by fibrous tissue, causing permanent PEI. It is usually underdiagnosed. In chronic PEI there is usually structural damage to the ductal system, and it is common for there to be an associated obstructive component due to stenosis or the formation of lithiasis (stones), which obstruct the normal flow of the duct. The pancreas also produces essential hormones for metabolic balance, mainly insulin. Chronic pancreatitis is often accompanied by insulin insufficiency. In these cases it is important to influence glycemic control.
SYMPTOMS AND CONSEQUENCES
- Weightloss
- lethargy
- Flatulence
- hair loss
- loose stools
- excessive appetite
- Altered eating habits (ingestion of plants, stones, ...)
- poor quality fur
- Statorrhoea: presence of lipid secretions in the feces
It can occur in animals of any age or breed. These processes are frequent in German shepherds.
