Kidney Protection . Renal failure is one of the most common conditions in dogs and cats, especially during the last years of their lives. It is a clinical syndrome that appears when the compensatory mechanisms of the diseased kidneys are not capable of maintaining their conservation, excretion and endocrine functions. As a consequence, there will be a retention of various substances (nitrogenous solutes), the balance of fluids, electrolytes, acid-base will be altered and the production of a vital hormone such as EPO (erythropoietin) will be reduced. The elevation of nitrogenous solutes in the blood will lead to an increase in blood urea and creatinine, enzymes that are markers of kidney function. This is what we call azotemia.
